Letter from a U.S. Marine Veteran

This is what our program is all about ~

Suffering from PTSD and recently losing his beloved dog to cancer, a U.S. Marine Veteran found his way to us through a Craig's List ad. He headed to the WAHS after seeing a picture of a dog named Sheba. We later found out that Sheba was the angel that led him there to meet Molly...
I asked permission to post his letter.

Suzi,
I wanted to follow up with you about our experience with the Pets for U.S. Vets program.  In my personal and humble opinion, it can also be called U.S. Vets for Pets program!  We went to WAHS with the intention of adopting Sheba.  It had turned out that she happened to be pet of the week and was on her "tour" over the same weekend I stumbled into your site and program.  We left Monday morning to go adopt her.  We got there 30 minutes after the shelter opened to find out she was pending adoption.  So we started looking around.  After carefully going through all the pens, we found two candidates to look at further.  We selected to look at Molly first.  After spending 30 or so minutes with her, we decided we didn't need to look any further.  She adapted to us immediately.  After hearing her story and where she came from (including the circumstances and conditions) we adopted her.  She rode well in the car, and was extremely trusting and affectionate.  I could tell that she had been trained in the basic sense and she did show very minor signs of some sort of negative activity with her previous family.  It took only 3 short days to get her out of her shell.  She is now already confident, knows the house, knows when and how to ask to go outside to the potty and absolutely loves being with my two sons (ages 8 and 10).  She is one of the kids now.  She just started eating her hard food last night and enjoys the occasional cheeseburger from McDonalds (when she goes to the vet and does well, which she did).
I have to say that based on the love she is showing our family (which she is now a part of), not only did we rescue her, but she rescued us equally.  I never imagined in a million years that I would find the exact dog I intended to find and adopt.
I thank you and everyone involved in this program.  It really means a lot to those of us lucky enough to have a caring community.
Semper Fidelis,

Dog Days of Summer

This episode of "Let's Talk Tailwaggers" focuses on pet safety in the summer heat. It seems that many people are unaware of just how hot it gets inside of parked vehicles. Lots of good advice is given.
